Seminars & Conferences: Sustainable Cities of the Mediterranean: Guiding Light from Alexandria

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) are organizing an international workshop on Sustainable Mediterranean Cities on 18 June 2014, at the premises of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has initiated a reflection on the prospect of a redevelopment of the city of Alexandria through 10 urban projects that could contribute to an integrated urban development approach. As is the case with many other Arab and Mediterranean cities, Alexandria faces major economic, social, urban and spatial challenges, and needs bold projects to put this millennia-old city on a sustainable path.

The objective of the workshop is to present an overview of some sustainable urban development challenges facing Alexandria, and to put them into perspective with similar experiences from other countries. The workshop also aims to give the involved stakeholders (officials and civil servants, academics, private sector, NGOs…) a say over the future of the city by allowing them to discuss and prioritize the projects. Finally, the workshop should enable development partners to identify possible new avenues for cooperation for the promotion of sustainable urban development.
