Seminar: The Maritime Heritage of the Red Sea
from: 17-1-2023 to 18-1-2023
Brief of the seminar:
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the maritime cultural heritage submerged in the waters of the Red Sea along its eastern and western coasts. Several research projects have been carried out on the shores and in the Egyptian and Saudi Arabian territorial waters to discover, document, and protect this heritage. Furthermore, both Egypt and Saudi Arabia are increasingly interested in the sustainable tourism potential of the underwater cultural heritage sites in the Red Sea, as many of these sites are considered major tourist attractions worldwide.
The seminar will feature a two-day program with the participation of a constellation of Egyptian and Saudi academics and researchers. They will present various contributions on the maritime history of the Red Sea in ancient and medieval times, as well as the most important research projects conducted in the region related to maritime cultural heritage, and opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in this field.
