Two recent trials have shown that women’s groups can reduce neonatal mortality in poor communities. This article focusses on the effectiveness of a scaled-up development programme with women’s groups to address maternal and neonatal care in three rural districts of Bangladesh.

Participants felt that husbands often resist the idea of modern method use because they lack knowledge, believe myths and negative rumors, and associate family planning with women's infidelity. The results suggest that women need to learn how to use arguments to counter their husbands' resistance.
