Initially aiming to set up a community-based child injury surveillance system using SMS for data collection, this approach was dismissed after preliminary investigations due to the costs of sending SMS and existing health data policies. Instead a computer-based information system was created.

Due to inconsistent internet access, the study aimed to demonstrate that mobile phones may be used on the African continent to submit both patient history and clinical photographs wirelessly to remote expert dermatologists. It was assessed whether these data are diagnostically reliable.
