The results of a 2010 survey on the acquisition of rural land by agro-investors in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are presented. It is argued that local and customary authorities, as well as farmer organizations need to screen intentions of presumed investors and build in safeguards.

In 2007, local people’s perceptions about benefits and constraints of participatory forest management in the Taita Hills, Kenya, were investigated. Respondents felt that lack of updated information about management practices and legal rights, hampered both participation and conservation.
