During the past several years the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) has undertaken several initiatives to inform Muslim women, the legal profession, community service agencies, policy-makers, and the general public about Muslim family laws and how they compare with Canadian family law, and the implications for Muslim women. CCMW published Muslim and Canadian Family Laws: A Comparative Primer in English and French and a series of booklets in several languages on family law topics to further its public education efforts. We also held information sessions across Canada for Muslim women, community service providers and the legal profession based on the information contained in the Primer and the booklets. Our recent publication, Muslim Marriage Contract kit , builds upon this as we hope it will raise awareness of the rights assured to women under Muslim Family laws, and also to draw attention to potential pitfalls.
The Muslim Marriage Contract Kit includes a 1) marriage certificate; 2) sample marriage contract; and 3) explanatory notes on the meaning and implications of the clauses used in the contract.
The civil examples in the kit are based on the law in Ontario, Canada.
