The BA at the Ninth Scientific Conference of Libraries, Archives and Information Science Department of Cairo University

The BA participated in the Ninth Scientific Conference of the Department of Libraries, Archives and Information of Cairo University, entitled “The Specialization of Libraries, Archives and Information in a Changing World: Identity, Methodology and Formation”, that was held in the Main Library of Cairo University, on 16 and 17 May 2012.
The BA contributed two research papers on the analysis and development of professional training in the field of library science. The papers were presented by two young BA librarians, Ms. Rania Osman and Ms. Sherine Eid. In addition, Ms Rehab Ouf, Head of the Arabic Standards Department, gave a presentation on the BA’s initiatives in reconciling the Arab and international efforts towards developing Arabic bibliographic standards for Arab library professionals. Couple of the standards were presented in details, namely the first full translation of the MARC 21 five formats and the development of a licensed Arabic version of the Dewey Decimal Classification the 23rd Edition (ADDC 23), both will soon be launched in late 2012-early 2013.
The conference gathered eminent professors and experts in the field of library and information science (LIS), who held extensive lectures and discussions on the interdisciplinary nature of the LIS field in a changing world. It also offered a platform for the students of the Department of Libraries, Archives and Information Science of Cairo University to present their projects.
It is worth mentioning that Bibliotheca Alexandrina also participated in the Online Computer Library Center Europe, Middle East and Africa Regional Council (OCLC EMEA) Membership Meeting on 8 May 2012 in Beirut. Ms. Rehab Ouf was invited to give a lightening talk about the partnership between BA and the OCLC to Arabize the Dewey Decimal Classification and extend some Dewey classes to make the international Dewey more hospitable to Islam and other subjects of special interest to the Arab and Islamic World, efforts that are tackled by the translation and the expansion teams within the Library Sector.
