Sentinels provide early warning of potential dangers to people so preventative actions can be taken in time to avert serious health consequences. For example, a cancer that occurs in a pet animal can alert us to the presence of a potential environmental carcinogen for humans BEFORE it would have been identified by other means, e.g. human epidemiologic studies, and possibly even before the cancer has a chance to develop in humans.
