Anyone handling raw pork or beef might become infected. It is assuredly not a tropical nor a traveler’s disease. Poor management of pigs is a common reason for infection. Of greatest concern is neurocysticercosis (cerebral cysticercosis) which causes seizures, mental disturbances, focal neurologic deficits and intracerebral lesions.
