Three complex-specific probes were generated from major PCR bands of reference stocks belonging to the a) L. mexicana, b) L. donovani and c) L. braziliensis complexes. Hybridisation of these probes to membrane-bound PCR products could reliably identify the strain to its complex. This much is just a start for a new classification of the genus.
