Trophic degenerative changes (Charcot joints) were commonly seen in the preantibiotic era but are rare now. Visceral crises included abdominal pain mimicing a surgical crisis. The Romberg sign (inability to stand with feet together and eyes closed without toppling over) isclassically present in patients with tabes dorsalis.
