Yellow fever spread
to Philadelphia from Santo Domingo, where a slave rebellion had just been
crushed. Many inhabitants fled this violence and some of these immigrants
came to Philadelphia, bringing the epidemic with them. Philadelphia’s
weather at time of year aided in providing ideal conditions for the disease,
as the summer was hot and dry, and the city was suffering from a severe
water shortage. |
