Before then in the
1880s, Walter Flemming (1843-1905) developed mitosis, and meiosis was
developed by Edouard Van Beneden (1846-1910). In 1905, Nettie Stevens
(1861-1912) observed in Tenebrio beetles that all pairs of homologous
chromosomes match, except for one pair of X & Y which determines sex.In the
same year, 1909, Edmund Beecher Wilson (1859-1939) also established the sex
chromosomes. Hugo De Vries (1848-1935) interpreted the works of Gregor Johan
Mendel (1822-1884) and the theory of inheritance.
