1. Chewing is
crucial to the digestion and processing of nutrients 2. If food is not chewed, choking can occur which in some cases may lead to aspiration of the food (entrance of food into the lungs) which in some cases may lead to pneumonia or death. (We’ll talk in more detail on this later) 3. Drooling may be a side effect of poor dental care: in severe cases may lead to social isolation, depression, transmission of disease, facial chapping (Refer to chapter in Arvedson and Brodsky Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding 1983) 4. Poor jaw alignment may impact feeding: comfort with textures, ability to properly masticate food, etc... |
