儿童时期的损伤事件发生率在不同社会群体中的差异远大于其他致死原因。贫困地区儿童相当一致地具有更高的死亡率,这一现象是由多方面的原因所致。贫困与伤害事件死亡率之间的关联在各国差异很大。相对于其他国家而言,某些国家贫困地区与富裕地区儿童死于损伤事件的差别要小一些。例如,在英国这一差别很大,而瑞典的差异就小一些。
在英国,穷孩子死于外伤的可能性要比富孩子大两倍。尽管从17世纪到1997-1998年度,英国的突发事件死亡率已经下降了多达1/3,但贫富儿童之间的死亡率差异仍在不断扩大。
