- Treaty Tribes have a Nation to Nation relationship with the U.S. government that was established by treaties or federal recognition. -Tribes are sovereign Nations that exist through treaties. Each tribe has it’s own government and constitution, with a unique legislative process. -States do not have jurisdiction on tribal lands. In fact, states and Tribal governments are often in legal conflict over Tribal treaty rights. -Through U.S. Congressional policy there is movement towards Tribal self-governance. This means the U.S. government is allowing tribes to manage their own destiny- run their own programs, such a health programs
The movement towards tribal self-governance is changing the way Native health care is delivered. Approximately forty percent of the tribes now operate their own health systems. |
