Obesity is a problem in the U.S. for two main reasons.  The first is that a large number of health problems are associated with obesity.  They include high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, arthritis, and many others.  The multitude of co-morbidities associated with obesity reflects the complexity and diversity of systems that contribute to energy balance. Obesity is also associated with several diseases within the research mission of the NIDDK, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes.
