However, these have only been recent changes.  Up until the 1930s, abnormal individuals appeared in sideshows throughout the country, which had changed little since the Middle Ages.  Crowds still paid a small fee to gawk and gasp at an oddity on stage.  During the Holocaust, as many as 200,000 individuals with deformities were killed at the Hadamar Concentration camp.  Eugenic and forced sterilization movements also targeted these individuals in countries besides Germany.53  Between 1971 and 1973, the body of Julia Pastrana traveled through the United States.  Pastrana had lived during the 19th century and suffered from generalized hypertrichosis terminalis, causing an abnormally large nose and ears and extreme hair growth.  Following the publicity for the tour, Pastrana was described as a result of a union between a human and a baboon. 54 Legal and scientific changes have not replaced all theories.
