In spite of several years of efforts, even though global prevalence
has reduced from 12 million (1977) to less than a million by 2001 ( Prevalence rate 1.4
per 10 000 population), the detection rate is still 13.3 per 100 000 population in the
year 2000. India, Brazil, Nepal, Myanmar, Madgascar, Indonesia, Angola have to intensify
their leprosy elimination activities.
