In this lecture, I try to give some sense of what is involved in
investigating outbreaks in the public health sector. I use
foodborne outbreaks as examples and present two hypothetical
outbreaks based my 8 years experience as health officer in a
large county health department. I describe how data from
epidemiologic and laboratory studies are linked in outbreak
investigations. I conclude with list
of steps taken in a generalized outbreak investigation.
