Iodine is essential for the formation of
thyroid hormones. The soils superficial layers gradually are enriched with iodine from rain. The iodine-rich soil was replaced by iodine poor-soil from crystalline rocks. Areas subjected to intense glaciation are iodine deficient and are areas in which endemic goiter is found. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in many areas of the developing countries in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.
