Diabetes Mellitus is another
important independent risk factor for the development of CHD although the mechanisms
relating to its development are not fully understood. Adult onset diabetes is age related
and is more prevalent in women than in men beyond the age of 45 years. (17) Over the past
20 years, the dramatic increase in obesity has lead to an increase in the number of women
with type 2 diabetes. NHANES III reported that the prevalence of diabetes in adults older
than 20 years is 4.5%in white women and 9.1% in black women. Individuals who are afflicted
with diabetes experience CHD rates 2 to 4 times higher than those without the disease (5).
