Overall, in the 15 years since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched, the number of cases has fallen by over 99%, from an estimated more than 350 000 cases in 1988 to 1919 reported cases in 2002 (as of 16 April 2003). In the same time period, the number of polio-infected countries was reduced from 125 to 7.
