A total of 5 1-mL
doses is administered intramuscularly in the upper arm, one each on days 0,
3, 7, 14 and 28. Human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) is also administered,
up to one week after the first dose of vaccine. As much as possible of the
full dose of very costly HRIG should be injected into and around the site of
exposure to block entry of the virus into the CNS. Any remaining HRIG should
be injected intramuscularly at a site away from the vaccine. Laboratory
workers who have contact with the rabies virus or who are involved in rabies
diagnosis, veterinarians, technical staff and students, animal control,
wildlife and zoo workers, and spelunkers (people who explore caves) all
should be vaccinated against rabies. |
