Of 202 surgeons in New York, 173 recalled at least one puncture injury in the preceding year (Lowenfels AB et al. Arch Surg 1989;124:1284-1286). Students are also at risk , often from what is called a "friendly" stick, I.e. injury from a fellow health care worker. In one study 32 of 97 students were cut or injured during their surgery rotation (Vergilio JA et al. Arch Surg 1993;128:36-38) This was "friendly" in 2/3 of the cases. |
