Although the numbers of cases had already began to decline it is likely that the
removal of the pump handle prevented another outbreak - around the same time as
the pump handle was removed the father of the child at 40 Broad street also
became ill - his faeces would have contaminated the well and probably led to

established that the water was contaminated in the manner alleged; nor is there
before us any sufficient evidence to show whether inhabitants of the district,
drinking from the well suffered in proportion more than other inhabitants of the
district who drank from other sources.”
