More than 471,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, predominantly in developing countries (1998). There is higher cervical cancer mortality in developing countries due to the lack of effective screening programs that are aimed at detecting precancerous conditions and treating them before they progress to invasive cancer. Effective screening/prevention programs have a great potential to reduce the number of deaths attributed to this chronic disease
