Two different
functions of the short-term process by itself and in conjunction with the
long-term process occurring at any other part within the neural tree. By
itself, short-term facilitation participates in short-term memory storage.
In conjunction with long-term facilitation at any other synapse, the
short-term process marks the specific synapse to which it is applied and
allows it to capture and use productively the proteins necessary to
establish the long-term process and to grow new synaptic connections.
