To make more sense out of the flowcharts listed previously, we should start with the mission of public health. According to
The Future of Public Health (NIH, 1988), the mission of public health is to “fulfill society’s interest in assuring conditions in which people can be healthy.”
To echo the American Association of Schools of Public Health, “public health carries out its mission through organized, interdisciplinary efforts that address the physical, mental, and environmental health concerns of communities . . . .” These health promotion and disease prevention efforts require a rather broad array of expertise and services, which can be basically subsumed under three core technological functions of public health.
