We began to examine other smooth muscle relaxants such as nitroglycerin, nitroprusside, hydrazines, etc. All of these agents increased cyclic GMP levels in several smooth muscle preparations, as well as other tissues, caused smooth muscle relaxation and activated guanylyl cyclase in most cell-free tissue extracts.
