In horses, exercise produces a marked blood volume expansion, due somewhat to contraction of the spleen. This occurs rapidly at the onset of exercise under the influence of the sympathetic nervous system and circulating catecholamines. The amount of released blood is dependent on work intensity, age, sex and training condition and could be as high as 12 liters of blood, yet might be 8 liters.
