The importance
of obtaining a proper diagnosis is related to the fact that anticoagulant therapy
inherently carries the risk for hemorrhagic complications. This risk is by no means
negligible. Furthermore, in patients who are suspected of VTE, only 25-30% will have their
diagnosis confirmed by objective diagnostic tests. Hence, it is equally important to
exclude the disease, so that anticoagulant therapy (and its complications) can be withheld
from patients without VTE. |
