Wiley was the key
player in overcoming these obstacles. He worked closely with Bok, Adams, and
the AMA in their anti-nostrum muckraking crusades, providing them valuable
inside information on the patent medicine industry. In 1904 the
Congressional anti-nostrum crusaders almost got a bill to the floor of the
Senate but it died before it could be considered. Finally these
Congressional crusaders got President Theodore Roosevelt, in December 1905
to call for a federal pure food and drug act to protect the American public.
