(These notes for
using in real teaching process) -BEFORE reviewing these notes on the lips, have participants chew an animal cracker normally and watch their neighbor, looking at the lips, noting what they are doing, how they are moving, etc... -Now, take another bite and pretend that the lips aren’t working very well, they are weak or don’t close, etc... -WHAT HAPPENED? Ask participants “What things went wrong?” [Record these on overhead or flip chart] -Problems: Loss of food, liquid from the mouth Nutrition is lost Now review notes on lips from slide. These important things that the lips must do translate into goals that therapists work on to improve nutrition and swallowing: increase strength, range of motion, stamina to maintain function throughout a meal. |
