Cessation of OPV 2006-8
Polio outbreaks caused by vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPVs) have shown that continuing the use of oral polio vaccine (OPV) for routine immunization could compromise the goal of eradicating all paralytic disease due to circulating polioviruses.
Therefore to minimize the risks associated with the use of oral polio vaccine it has been recognized that the world must stop the routine use of this vaccine as soon as possible after global certification, while surveillance sensitivity and population immunity are high.
