In 2003 I had the opportunity to work with the
health clinics and midwives in Afghanistan. One of the managers whom we
hired for one of the clinics happened to have been, prior to his work with
us, a judge for the Taliban. We had to convince this man to allow the
traditional midwives to use oxytocin, which was no small task. We also had
to convince him against his cultural beliefs, that the midwives deserved to
be paid. |
