2. Invention of the internal combustion engine led fairly rapidly in the early 20th century to replacement of horse-drawn transport by trucks and cars. Cars don't leave heaps of manure in stables and on city streets, manure in which flies breed, and spread fecal-oral infection. Despite the horrendous environmental problems it has caused, the age of the automobile did help to reduce infant and early child deaths from diarrheal diseases.
