In a west coast health plan, Jennifer Mertens and Connie Weisner
and colleagues found that patients with alcohol or other drug
problems (AOD)
receiving substance abuse treatment (as shown in the first column of
numbers) were significantly more likely than those without substance
abuse disorders, the controls in the column on the far right, to
have each of these conditions listed on the left, again including
some very common medical and psychiatric conditions such as low back
pain, depression, asthma and arthritis.
