She participated in the effort to commute the death sentences of Sacco and Vanzetti. She was active in the peace movement and actively opposed the Viet Nam War. She intervened with the Attorney General of the United States who had designated as a Communist-front organization the American Committee for Foreign Born of which she was a sponsor.
