be double stranded (+ and -) or single stranded (+ or -). -ve means it is antisense The genes are usually in tandem although some viruses, notably influenza virus, have each gene on a separate segment of nucleic acid. It is considered to have a liquid crystal structure which maintains its organisation and function.
