Isolates are
sometimes grouped together according to their antigens into subtypes, serotypes
(types) e.g. influenza A Newmarket 1976, and a nucleoprotein of (sero)type A and an H
spike of subtype 3. A strain is a well-defined isolate as might be in a vaccine. Sequencing has validated this historical classification scheme and is now always used to confirm the identity of a new virus. |
