PORCINE ENTEROVIRUSES 1 - 8

All infect the epithelium of the small intestine and are antigenically distinct. Only serotype 1 (Teschen-Talfan) is a proven important pathogen. Dubious experimental evidence led to other enteroviruses being associated with the SMEDI syndrome in pigs.

TESCHEN -TALFAN

Teschen is a region in Czechsolakia where the disease was first reported. Faeces are usually the source of infection. In clinical disease viraemia is followed by replication in neurones (like polio). This correlates with tremors, inco-ordination and ataxia and then death/convulsions. Vaccination in EU not UK where the disease is notifiable.
