Control.
- A tissue culture attenuated live virus is protective against abortion, but a mild febrile reaction may occur and the vaccine should not be given to mares in late pregnancy.
- The disease is now notifiable to the MAFF and the jockey club. Infected stallions are restricted from teasing, mating or AI use except with vaccinated mares until test mating (see above) is OK. Some stallions will become persistent shedders and require castration. (see Vet Rec, July 22^nd 1995, p 78).
- Serology. Stables should isolate any imported horse for 21 days and have it tested for antibody at arrival and 14 days later. Stallions should be tested each year after Jan 1^st but before mating Mares should be tested within 4 weeks of mating.
