The first medical problems faced by the colonists appeared, not in colonial America, but during the long crossing from the Old to the New World.  The expectant pioneers were herded aboard small ships, where the colonists remained incarcerated during the four to twelve week voyage. During this time they lived in terribly crowded, unsanitary conditions, and also dined on a limited menu of salt pork, bread, water, and only occasional greens.
