During
Perestroika, in the late 1980s, Russia's life expectancy, though lower than western
Europe, Japan, or America, was higher than longevity in Asia or Latin America. In another
two decades, Russia will number among those lower than the 125 countries out of the 188
nations surveyed by the UN. The political and strategic repercussions of the health crisis
in Russia today, aside from the economic and humanitarian concerns, will have even greater
