Tertiary prevention What has traditionally been thought of as rehabilitation can also be considered tertiary prevention. Strategies to help minimize complications and facilitate optimum rehabilitation once a disease has occurred may include both medical and educational approaches. Successful implementation of such methods can actually prevent a recurrence of an illness and/or improve a person’s functional ability. Counseling and implementing the practice of healthy lifestyles are examples of tertiary preventive approaches. Examples: Life-style counseling for post cardiac patients and patient education about appropriate exercises following stroke. |
