More than 7 out of ten children between ages 5 and 14, or about 28 million children, ride bicycles in the U.S.

Unfortunately, this is not without risk. In 1998, about 200 such children die, and another 100,000 sustain a non-fatal injury requiring emergency department care.

Of these, about 65% of the fatal injuries involve a head injury and 20% of the non-fatal injuries involve a head injury result in a brain injury.
