Firas Kobeissy

Assistant Professor

Institution:

University of Florida

Country:

Lebanon

Nomination Year:

From 2014 To 2018

Biography:

Dr. Kobeissy is an assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine; University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Dr. Kobeissy’s research involves investigating biomarkers of neuronal cell injury and the role of protease activation (caspase and calpain) in inducing protein break down iidentifying degradomic profile. In this area, Dr. Kobeissy utilizes an advanced multidimensional neuroproteomics/systems biology platforms to investigate differential markers of central nervous injury that will be translated into clinical settings. We hypothesize that upon brain trauma; proteases will be activated leading to different cell death mechanism (apoptosis, necrosis and/or autophagic injury) which will lead to an alteration in protein dynamics leading to protein degradation that can serve as potential brain injury specific biomarker upon detection. Dr. Kobeissy is the author of more than 90 articles, reviews and book chapters along with two patents. He is the editor of four books “Psychiatric Disorders: Methods and Protocols (Springer Publisher), Biomarkers of Brain Injury and Neurological Disorders (CRC Publisher) and Brain Neurotrauma: Molecular, Neuropsychological and Rehabilitation Aspects (Taylor & Francis) and (Injury Models of the Central Nervous System: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology :https://www.amazon.com/Injury-Models-Central-Nervous-System/dp/1493938142/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8...). He is a member of the Center of Neuroproteomics and Biomarker Research and the Center for Traumatic Brain Injury Studies at the McKnight Brain Institute at the University of Florida.
