From Spoof Egyptology to Opthalmology: Some Rare Egyptian Periodicals 1830s-1880 A study of some rare Egyptian periodicals over a fifty-year period in the early history of the Egyptian press. From spoof Egyptology ‘The Thoth’ in Muhammad Ali’s reign to ‘The Egyptian Herald’ (1880) ‘The Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance’, the first outlet for the ‘opinions of the English speaking community. A review of the range and complexity of the Egyptian press, looking at one of the first medical journals Giornale oftalmologico egiziano (1851) to the school journal, Bulletin des écoles libres et gratuites (1869), the literary periodical, Album Egiziano di Amena Letteratura (1853), and one of several masonic journals appearing in Isma’il’s reign, Bulletin maçonnique (1867).
