We had two presentations today. The first one was by Mohamed Mobarak and it was entitled “IWD 2010 International Women’s Day”. In the past women used to be inherited. John Stuart Mill was the first one to ask for women’s right to vote. The presenter also shed light on why women need a special day. He also spoke about Kassem Amin and Hoda Shaarawy and their efforts the women liberation movement in Egypt. However, still until today many women and children are brought to USA to work as slaves ”Human trafficking”. Mobarak also explained how violence against women is a public health problem.
After that Mrs. Layla Abdel Hady moderated an open discussion about the presentation, how to utilize this day to enhance and improve conditions of women, the quota system and homeless children.
The last presentation “Climate Change: A Crawling Health Hazard” by Moustafa El- Hawary. As we can see climate change cannot be denied anymore, and we must accept the fact that it is happening and begin making plans. He explained how the global warming is happening and what its proofs are. He discussed some environmental impacts like: sea-level rise, coastal flooding, natural disasters and water shortage. He also tackled the health hazards that would occur. They include diseases like Malaria, diarrhea, air pollution and heat waves that strike countries and kill hundreds of people. Solutions began to take place; conferences are held each year to help save the earth, awareness campaigns and initiatives like earth hour are made possible by people who care about the future of this planet.
